Hummingbird Bakery

When I first arrived in London, I was introduced to this sweet delight of a bakery by some sweet-tooth friends.

With a friend’s birthday coming up, what better excuse than to order a cake from there. The red velvet cake was suggested. I have never even heard of Red Velvet cake before this and was told that it is Oprah Winfrey’s favourite cake.

When the day came, a few of us gasped in awe at the size of the cake. Three layers of moist vanilla cake separated by cream cheese frosting. The sheer decadence of what lay before us was trying to register in our brains. Sorry but I forgot to take a picture of the cake, if you look at the pic above, the red velvet cake is at the top right to give you an idea of the size of it.

Biting into our portions, the cake was really moist with hints of vanilla and chocolate teasing our taste buds. The cream cheese frosting ups the richness factors and this is one intense experience. Yummy!

Took us weeks to finish the cake and it was even the biggest size that we ordered.

A few months later, I was in South Kensington and pop into the store.

We each ordered a cupcake and had a bite from each other’s cupcake.

The cupcake has more of a medium density and it seems to be a ratio of 60/40 in terms of the cupcake and the icing. I find that the icing is made very well. Creamy yet light and bursting with flavour. It is definitely good but I preferred Cupcakes on Pitt in Sydney.

My favourite is Chocolate cupcakes with chocolate icing. Double whammy of chocolate, super rich!

Couldn't resist buying a few back home for later!
