Going on the Malaysian trail in London (Part 2) with C&R, Kopitiam and Uncle Lim's Kitchen

With the second largest ethnic population in Malaysia being Chinese, I found my way to a few Chinese Malaysian restaurants as well.

Malaysia Kopitiam

I ate at Kopitiam very soon after I first arrived in London as it was the only place that I knew that made 'pan mee' 板面. I wasn't too impressed but I absolutely loved the sambal carrot cake. The extra touch of sambal gave it that more-ish kick!

I came back another time when a friend of mine, Ms Chocoholic wanted to eat there and I ordered something else that I've never tried before which is the Hokkien Noodles. They were tasty but did not leave a lasting impression.

C&R

Where is C&R? That is the most frequent question that gets asked it seems as they are not located along the main street but in a tiny alleyway that seems to stop some people in their tracks from trod-ding down.

I make my way here anytime whether it's meeting up with friends or just to have some dishes like the carrot cake or 面粉糕. The food always satisfies though it may not be the best but is tasty and cheap.

Uncle Lim's Kitchen

Located in Croydon, it isn't the most convenient of places to go and eat. However, I've always wanted to go after hearing about their Hainanese chicken rice.

I finally found an opportunity to head there and along with me came my foodie in crime, SC. Uncle Lim's Kitchen is located within the shopping mall and it did take a bit of time to find it. The place isn't fancy or anything but the most important thing is really how good is the food right?

So we ordered the Hainanese Chicken Rice and Wan Tan Hor.

Getting the not as positive out of the way, the chicken rice is seriously not Hainanese chicken rice as advertised but is regular chicken rice. Other than that, both were seriously awesome.

It tasted exactly like those that I would eat at any stalls in Malaysia and more-ish! I cannot believe that I had to go all the way to Croydon to eat dishes of this standard. Ooh, you locals don't know how lucky you are.

We ended with a dessert that I don't see often here which is bubur cha cha. This is a yam soup based dessert. We were struggling to finish but I can see myself travelling that distance to come back here again.

Will I recommend: Yes
Will I come back: Yes
Have I had better: Not in the UK.

  1. I do like C & R, but haven't eaten there for an age now ever since Rasa Sayang opened. I should go back for a revisit.

  2. Do check out Gourmet Garden in Hendon if you have the chance. They serve KL Hokkien Mee and do seriously good things to crab.
