Zen Japanese Grill & Sushi Bar Boston: Unmemorable food in a great location

Zen sushi Bar

Zen Japanese Grill & Sushi Bar is located at Beacon Hill. A popular area that is a mere minutes walk away from Boston Common and the State House.

After some decadent eating in New York and my Lobster dinner a day earlier, I just wanted something light. Japanese seems to fit the bill and Zen Jap Grill & Sushi Bar was chosen as the venue for dinner.

Seeing that this place has Japanese Grill in its name, I scoured the menu looking for grill stuff but couldnt not find anything actually. I was excited to see Nasu Dengaku on the menu although this comes with bonito flakes? Nevertheless, it was ordered along with a chef's special.

Nasu Dengaku $5.95

I was quite disappointed with the Nasu dengaku. The skim was removed which I guess makes for easy eating? I think this was parboiled and topped with bonito flakes. It lacks the punch and depth that the miso would give.

Zen Tekkaa Don $13.95

The don comprises of thinly sliced layers of yellow fin tuna, lightly seared. It was good but unmemorable.

I guess the last sentence says it all.

The Friendly Toast, Cambridge/Boston: Cute name with fantastic food!

One thing I love about reading food blogs is the hidden discoveries and wonderful places to eat, especially when you have never been to that place before.

The name 'The Friendly Toast' came up in both food blogs and food websites with positivity. Heck, even the name conjured an image of a piece of toast wearing white boots on its stick legs, stick arms swinging in mid walk waving and a huge wide smile. Ok, I'm thinking of the peanut butter character but replaced it with a toast instead.

The Friendly Toast isn't located in a touristy area or even in Central Boston. The closest one is in Cambridge and is a distance from Harvard Square which most tourist ventures to.

However, it’s not difficult to get to if you're already travelling on the red line via train to Harvard. From downtown Boston or Harvard, hop onto the red line and disembark at Kendall station which should take no more than 10 minutes or so depending on which direction. Fare is $2 one way.

Walk 10 minutes from the station to Kendall Square which you will pass Marriott and Starbucks on the way and you'll find a brightly coloured 'Friendly Toast' sign.

The playful cheekiness and feel of vibrant youth is felt even in the design of the name. Inside, bright green colours the wall s with various interesting figurines and stuff adorned the place. A retro bar on one side, the place is friendly and relaxing.

The Friendly Toast serves all day breakfast, pancakes and other brunch friendly items.

I am an all day breakfast kinda girl and the home fries and home made toast in the Basic Breakfast sold it to me. You can choose how you want your eggs and I chose mine to be scrambled. Choice of toast was cinnamon raisin for me.

Friendly Toast
I didn't have to wait long before my breakfast was served. I could immediately smell the cinnamon raisin toast, very enticing indeed. Not to mention that the toast is seriously thick and huge as I've tried to show in the pic.

Biting into the toast, I was on cloud nine. The toast is friendly alright, invitingly so! Not overly buttery, just creamy and smooth enough that you can still get the crunch from the bread. This is where its thickness only works to its advantage. And I haven't even gotten to the cinnamon and raisin yet. Just one word, awesome!

The scrambled eggs were light and fluffy with the right balance of creaminess. The home fries, I'm not a huge fan of potatoes and they usually remain quite untouched on my plate but not these. I couldn't stop eating them.

As you can see, the portions were not small but by the end, nothing was left on the plate. A highly satisfying meal and wallet friendly too. It was less than $10 including service.

I'm trying those pancakes the next time I am here.

Gourmet Dumpling House, Boston: Waging war with the Lobster

I stopped by in Boston as part of my US trip and needless to say, a visit to the fourth biggest Chinatown in the US was warranted. My curiosity was further heightened as I wanted to check out what festivities are there as it is still Chinese New Year.

Boston's Chinatown is definitely looking better than the one in Washington. There are also a lot more diversity in cuisines as expected from a largely liberal population as repeatedly mentioned by the tour guides. One thing that I noticed was the number of Taiwanese cuisine eateries available in Boston and neighbouring Cambridge.

I don't see a lot of those even in Sydney or London which are mainly populated with Cantonese followed by Sichuan.

Oh, the only evidence of CNY was in a Malaysian restaurant called Penang which had a banner outside advertising Yee Sang.

Having seen positive reviews of Gourmet Dumpling House, I found it while walking around and in I went to have dinner. The place was already buzzing with diners and take-aways even though it was early dinnertime.

It was hard to decide as there were so many dishes on the menu. In the end, the decision was to go seafood based as this is Boston and if you're going to try anything, it would have to be the lobster and other seafood.

Crab Rangoons 蟹角 $5.95

If you like crabmeat mixed into mayonnaise and wrapped with wonton skin that is deep fried, then this is the one for you. For me, this seems to be catered for the western palate and hence not for me.

Lobsters with Mixed Vegetables in Claypot 龙虾砂锅 $17.95

My eyes literally widened when this arrive and you can see why. Even the waitress said, this is huge, enjoy! Now why didn't the waitress tell me when I ordered? I would certainly have skipped the appetiser and definitely did not need a bowl of rice to go with it.

I ordered a single portion and this looks *ahem* like portion for two if not three.

So now I need a strategy to consume this and hence start my battle with Mr. Lobster in claypot. First decision was to forego that Crab Rangoon, precious space is needed for the lobster instead.

Biting into the lobster meat, this is so wonderful. Fresh, bouncy, chewy texture. Think QQ. Delicious!!

Prawns have been added to the broth to give it more depth, think seafood bisque but Chinese style. The prawns are a little mushy and did not taste fresh. The cabbage, tofu and carrots rounded out the flavours nicely.

As I digged further in the claypot, more and more pieces of Mr. Lobster emerged, there is a whole lobster in there!

Ok, so priority is to consume all of Mr. Lobster. So, half eaten bowl of rice was abandoned while I successfully managed to finish the body and moved onto the claws.

Seriously, how big is this lobster? There is still head, tail and claws to go. Bye bye it was to the last remaininprawn, cabbage and tofu.

Munch munch munch the battle continues.

Before I forget, you don't need to order a separate bowl of rice as the lobster claypot comes with noodles. These flat wide rice noodles, perfect accompaniment.

My plate is now piled up to the brim with the shells which are threatening to tipple over. One did, the claw.

I finally had to wave the white flag after some serious determination and eating. Mr. Lobster won back his head and me the rest.

At this point, I was stuffed and tipsy with satisfaction. To reiterate how good the soup is, I was still drinking as much of it as I could. You know how you are really full but it is so good that you can't stop? Yup, that was what the soup was doing to me.

I heaved a big sigh at this point which was noted by the other diners who laughed. Left hugely satisfied.

If you have had your lobster rolls and seafood chowder in Boston and want to try something different, I definitely recommend the lobster claypot.

Come prepared.
