Kani Doraku Crab Restaurant, Osaka

Untitled

Japan is a place like no other and I find myself travelling back there time and time again.

When I was in Osaka, I found myself eating at Kani Doraku which turned out to be one of the most memorable meals I've had.

Kani Doraku serves crab, quite obviously depicted by this big giant crab waving at the front of the restaurant.

I settled in for a ten course dinner where parts of the crab is served in different ways. Eye-openingly delicious, the highlights were the crab meat sashimi style - it isn't something that I'll probably order eagerly again but definitely worth trying at least once and a tofu hot pot where the aroma itself had me swooned and swirling on cloud nine.

If you find yourself in Osaka, this is not a place to be missed.

The Lock Up

This is a prison-themed restaurant located in Shibuya. Although we had directions, it still wasn’t easy trying to find it. It was located next to a flight of stairs heading downwards, not easy to spot when you can’t really read the language!

We were treated to some spooky scenes and moving floors before arriving at a rusty iron clad door. A victim was handcuffed and the rest of the party followed to our prison cell. It was really cool!

Browsing the menu, there were cocktails were in tubes and syringes with names like DNA experiment and came in colourful concoctions.

We made a mistake with our order and realised later that we ordered the all you can drink cocktails for 90 minutes. We were drowning ourselves in cocktails as soon as we realised that.

It was so much fun!

We were greeted with a surprise halfway through our meals (will keep it a surprise!) and were fully entertained! The food is not the draw point but if you are looking for a good time out or to celebrate with friends, definitely an awesome choice!

Kaishoku Michiba

Iron chef no. 2 that we are trying in Tokyo, Japanese cuisine - Rokusaburo Michiba.

Lunch is a good way of trying out quality restaurants where the price tag for dinner could be a bit too much!

Really like the decor!

2 different lunch degustation was ordered.

Degustation 1

Hors d’oeuvre
(Shrimp, green beans, gingko nut, whelk, chestnut and pine nut dressed with a tofu and chestnut puree)

Seasonal Platter
(Sashimi of the Day)

Main Course - 5 different dishes
(Sweet soy glazed salmon and a tofu dumpling grilled in the oven served with a thickened bonito broth and topped with salmon roe)
(Steamed fish and simmered turnip served with a miso flavoured americaine sauce)
(Deep fried shrimp and maitake mushroom served with grated daikon radish)
(Dish of the Day)

(Plain rice served with a fragrant miso soup and pickles)

(Dessert of the day)

Degustation 2

Degustation 2 mirrors degustation 1 but with a smaller menu and price.

We ordered the second option for the main course which is the udon wheat noodles.

Fresh ingredients topped with subtle and heavy flavours used like they were intertwined in a dance to accentuate the taste of the main centrepiece in each dish. The standard and quality is exquisite and is the better experience of the 2 iron chefs that I have been so far.

My Tokyo Sandwich Series

During my Tokyo trip, I was introduced to this sandwiches where are really cheap and economical when you need to rush around travelling from one place to another and have no time to have a meal. These sandwiches really intrigued me as their packaging has a cute picture which shows what is meant to be inside the sandwiches.

It was just sooo cute and I got hooked trying to find as many flavours as I can in the convenience stores. Yummy...yummy!!

Can you guess what some of the flavours are?

This is egg!

Noodles!

Strawberries & Cream

Maple syrup
