Sun Luen, Chinatown: My choice for egg tarts

Picture 410

I love eggs and I can have it all the time and love it cooked in many ways. So it's not too surprised that I do adore a good egg tart.

After sampling many in London, I found my go to place for a good one which is Sun Luen in Chinatown.

Egg tarts are best eaten fresh off the oven and still warm but a good one taste just as good even if left overnight and this was where Sun Luen got me.

The pastry itself is just the right thickness that it is dense enough to taste the buttery texture but thin enough that it is flaky and has an ever so slight grainy crunch. The egg filling itself was smooth and silky and soft and its perfume is strong enough to tease and draw you in.

I love them and happily buy them for friends too. So if you're in Chinatown and craving egg tarts, do give this place a try and let me know what you think.

Will I recommend: Yes
Will I come back: Yes
Have I had better: Yes but not in London

Sendai & Kandazawa food

Bought some zunda mochi which is a specialty of Sendai. It is sweet green soybean paste eaten with soft glutinous rice balls that is soft and chewy. Best eaten cold was the advice that I got.

This doesn’t taste soybean-ish but in fact “fresh” and “green” is what comes to mind. As I ate it cold, the coldness combined with the hardened chewiness of the mochi and freshness of the soybean paste is just exquisite! Didn’t take long to finish the whole box!

For lunch, we stopped at this place which is just outside of the Kenrokuen gardens. One of the party pointed out that they have amaebi (sweet prawns) and jibuni on their menu which is meant to be really good from this region. No guesses on what was ordered!

The amaebi is so fresh and sweet, was perfect for the hot weather on that day. The jibuni is made from boiled and seasoned duck and various vegetables. It was hearty yet light, very rustic due to the gamey taste coming from the duck. Sublime!

One more please!

So, if you're craving green tea kit kat, head down to Miracle supermarket.

I couldn't resist trying the Hokkaido Milk kit kat either!
