NOW is quite new as it opened about a year ago. I was really excited when it first opened as they were going to have rice porridge on their menu. I just love rice porridge and besides making it at home or having it as dim sum, you are pretty much stuck for choices that offer this in London.

NOW StreetFood, Liverpool street station
NOW StreetFoods has been opened for quite a few months now and is located next to Liverpool street station. An expansion from Ping Pong, the concept is to bring street snacks and bites to the busy and time poor lunch time crowd.
I was quite excited as I always love a good Chinese porridge which they offer. Alas! It is only available until around 11am and I left empty handed on my first visit.
No matter, I decided to delve into other delicacies on offer. This is meant to be more of a take away and walking the street type of snacks place as there are only a few stools available for eating in.
The 3 large screens shows what is available for the day and changes quite regularly as noticed during my various visits.
Classic Mixed Basket £3.99
The classic comes with chive dumpling, seafood dumpling, coriander dumpling, chicken Shu Mai, spicy vegetable dumpling and chicken cashew nut dumpling (1 each).
Seafood Mixed Basket £3.99
The seafood comes with Har Gau dumpling, seafood dumpling and coriander dumplings (2 each).
Egg Tart £0.99
Beef coconut rice pot £3.89
Chocolate Pau £0.99
They are all quite reasonably priced and if you are craving for some dim sum at odd hours, both the classic mixed basket and seafood mixed baskets are there to satisfy. I found that they were doughy but still adequately tasty and hits the right spots during those craving moments. Don’t expect awesome dim sum, at the price it is, you get what you paid for!
The egg tart was normal. You get more rice than beef and mushrooms in the beef coconut rice pot, and portion wise is not for the large eaters. I love the chocolate pau, basically the normal buns but instead of pork, you get chocolate. Quite savoury as dark chocolate is used and at £0.99, don’t hesitate!
Rice porridge with banana and sesame £1.99
I finally got to eat my rice porridge and the banana and sesame was the only one available. As much as the menu says that 3 delicious toppings is available everyday, I find that it is not the case as this was the only one available. On another occasion, there was none available, only a pork rice dish was offered which is not rice porridge at all!!
If you like your oats and don’t want to have the whole western bacon and eggs breakfasts, the rice porridge is a good alternative and I really enjoyed my banana porridge although it can definitely do with a lot less sesame.
It may not be as good as street snacks from their origin countries, but at least this is a viable option available to the boring sandwiches scene.

Beard Papa's 2nd Time
After raving about Beard Papa's, a friend of mine begged me to get some for her. I happily said yes and trotted there again. This time I got to take more pictures in action. Teehee!

Putting the cream into the puff in action/Passing to other person for next step

She picks it up and dust it with green tea/chocolate/vanilla powder to heighten the flavour before packing it in individual packets

I noticed this at the counter and am glad to know that it doesn't have any added preservatives.

Just before leaving, saw the guy about to place the dough into the oven~ Ooh!
Have to say, I had the vanilla puff again and the puffs are still as good as the last time!

Beard Papa's 1st Time
I've been working in Chatswood for quite a bit and decided to check out food blogs on what food that I might not know about. Came across this post by Helen about Beard Papa's. It turned out that this originated from Osaka where I was on holiday barely two months ago and did try some.
I decided to try this in Sydney and went searching for Beard Papa's. I have to say that it really isn't easy to find unless you were specifically searching for it. Finally found it and I was so excited.
They had this sign up which displays some of the facts about Beard Papa's. Anything that says cream, chicken and eggs is good with me!

Adding the final touches
I bought the original "vanilla" puffs as the "green tea" version was not available. The lady selected a puff from the display of puffs and place it at one of the machines to fill it with vanilla. After some dusting of icing sugar, it was placed into a plastic bag (depicted below) and it is now in my hands!
Vanilla puff in the bag!
I hurriedly went back to the office and open it. My..it looks delicious! Took my first bite and wow! The puff itself is crunchy on the outside and soft inside. The pastry is light and airy so that it doesn't leave a heavy feeling in your mouth! Got to the vanilla and it was good..you could see the specks of vanilla bean in the cream. Took a picture but you can't quite see the vanilla bean specks!
I went back two days later to see if I can try the green tea version and yippee! They have it! I decided to buy a few more for some friends of mine and ended up buying twelve (1 puff - $2.50, 12 puffs = $12.00). They placed the puffs into a box this time.
They were all arranged so nicely in the box. The kitchen has three machines and each holds one flavour. The chocolate puff was dusted with cocoa powder, green tea puff with "matcha" powder and so on.
Guess which one I tried first? The green tea one of course as I am obsessed with all things green tea. The flavour was really strong which was what I like and the puff is still as what I described and had the first time.
Yummy....I have to say that the cream was always cold, even the ones that I bought in Japan. Next time, I might experiment by heating it up in the oven to see how it taste like.
If you have tried the hot version, tell me about your experience.

碗仔糕和香蕉糕
I went exploring around Wan Chai when I came across this store. I noticed quite a long queue and figured that this is probably another food that I should try. While queueing, I noticed a celebrity photo. Have a look at it to see if you can figure out who. He is one of my favourite TVB artiste. You can see from the pictures that this store promotes that their food was made the authentic and traditional way. Even the decor was olden times posters and the music playing was from the olden opera times as well.

Not too sure about what to buy so I looked at the previous customers for guidance. I bought the 碗仔糕和香蕉糕. I was quite excited about trying it as I've always seen 碗仔糕 in movies and shows. It taste quite creamy. By itself, it doesn't actually have much flavour, thus the flavour comes from the red beans.
I tried the 香蕉糕 after that. The fragrance of the bananas was evident immediately once I open the container. Smells soo good! I really like this one although my sis didn't really like it as the texture was too sticky for her. It was also a little grainy but I presume that that was how it was meant to be.

Little snacks along the street...
Went shopping around "MongKok (王角)today and decided to try out the fish balls at one of the stalls. It was HKD5. Sigh..if only it was that kind of price in Sydney. I have to say that it was really juicy and the texture was just right...very chewy (很有弹性)。I've not had such delicious fish balls in ages!

Later, my sis started exclaiming and I found out why. We were near a "Smelly Tofu store". Haha!
I was hesitant to try it but decided that for the sake of food, I should try it and I bought myself one. I'm don't like to eat spicy stuff but this was an exception and I placed some chilli sauce on it.
I had to stand away from my sis while trying this as she doesn't like the smell. I actually quite like it, the chilli sauce does accentuate the taste and flavour of the tofu. Halfway through eating it and I don't even notice the smell anymore.
Yum..yum....
