Gessler at Daquise

Have you ever read someone's dining experience and it just gets you so excited that you have to head there like almost immediately?

This was what happened when I read this on The London Foodie blog. When I was in Poland, we had a nice little lady who cooked lunch for us everyday and it was simple and delicious home cooked food. In fact, I loved her home cooked food slightly more than the restaurants that I went to. So you bet I have fond memories of Polish food.

So I was really excited to read about a Polish restaurant and I zipped down there at the earliest opportunity. So it was a group of us who settled in for dinner.

Pierozki £9.5

A few of us ordered the Pierozki with some choosing meat and some going with cheese. There isn't one that is better than the other; I think it is more a case of which filling appeals to you more. I preferred the cheese version more but it was a mixed vote on the choice of fillings.

The dumplings did not have a thick or doughy skin which allowed the flavours of the fillings to shine through. Clean and tasty.

Oriental Canteen: Cheap and Fast

If you happen to be around South Kensington and need somewhere to grab a bite that is fast and cheap, there aren't many choices around.

A group of us were there recently for the Pan-Asian Film Festival and with only a 30 minute break to the next film, we walked around hurriedly looking for a place. A short walk later, we spied Oriental Canteen which I've been once when I first arrived in London.

In we went as there was a table large enough to fit us all. The dishes averages around £5 and the place comprises mainly of students.

The food was decent enough, tasty and quick. Sometimes you just want a quick bite and I found mine.

Will I recommend: Yes, when you're looking for a quick bite
Will I come back: Yes
Have I had better: Yes

Hummingbird Bakery

When I first arrived in London, I was introduced to this sweet delight of a bakery by some sweet-tooth friends.

With a friend’s birthday coming up, what better excuse than to order a cake from there. The red velvet cake was suggested. I have never even heard of Red Velvet cake before this and was told that it is Oprah Winfrey’s favourite cake.

When the day came, a few of us gasped in awe at the size of the cake. Three layers of moist vanilla cake separated by cream cheese frosting. The sheer decadence of what lay before us was trying to register in our brains. Sorry but I forgot to take a picture of the cake, if you look at the pic above, the red velvet cake is at the top right to give you an idea of the size of it.

Biting into our portions, the cake was really moist with hints of vanilla and chocolate teasing our taste buds. The cream cheese frosting ups the richness factors and this is one intense experience. Yummy!

Took us weeks to finish the cake and it was even the biggest size that we ordered.

A few months later, I was in South Kensington and pop into the store.

We each ordered a cupcake and had a bite from each other’s cupcake.

The cupcake has more of a medium density and it seems to be a ratio of 60/40 in terms of the cupcake and the icing. I find that the icing is made very well. Creamy yet light and bursting with flavour. It is definitely good but I preferred Cupcakes on Pitt in Sydney.

My favourite is Chocolate cupcakes with chocolate icing. Double whammy of chocolate, super rich!

Couldn't resist buying a few back home for later!
