River Cafe, Hammersmith

Ms. Chocoholic raves about the chocolate nemesis and would describe in detail, its loveliness and the pleasure that she experienced when she had it the first time. She said that we should try it where it originally came from and It didn't take much convincing after where we found ourselves heading to The River Cafe.

With the sun shining and kids and people enjoying the al fresco seating outside, you couldn't help but be in a jolly mood. Exuding an antipodean cafe vibe, we were relaxed and in a good mood.

The Calamai al Ferri £15 was simple, clean and fresh.

Untitled

Agnoli di Coniglio - pasta stuffed with rabbit slow-cooked with spring garlic and Franz Haas Pinot Nero £14

River Cafe

Tagliatelle di Asparagi con Fonduta - pasta with asparagus, cream, egg yolk and parmesan £14

Untitled

Dover Sole wood roasted with Capers & Marjoram with slow-cooked Florence Fennel and large leaf rocket £34

Untitled

Blue Lobster split & wood roasted with Wild Oregano, Chilli & Lemon with Crushed Potatoes, Spring Peas & Wild Watercress £45

Untitled

Lamb with Salsa Rosso Piccante, Borlotti di Lamon & Chargrilled Leeks £31

Overall, each dish was tasty and the flavours were clean and balanced though it wasn't brilliant.  For the prices charged, I would expect it to be justified by either the ingredients to be of really good quality that simplicity cooking is used to allow the natural flavours to sing through or cooking techniques and flavours were paired for something delicious. It was neither for me.

We now arrived at desserts and the infamous chocolate nemesis was ordered amongst others.

I have to say that Ms. Chocoholic's description sounded better than it tasted.

We still had a great time but the company was more memorable than the food itself.

Will I recommend: Yes
Will I come back: No
Have I had better: Yes

IL Centro

I was in Brisbane for work and we were all into trying out and having some good food. The first night, we walked into Il Centro which is located at Eagle Street Pier.

One of my friends said that she heard that they are well known for their Sandcrab lasagne. True enough, it was stated on the menu as their “Famous Sandcrab lasagne”. Obviously, we had to give it a try.

We ordered the Fantasia De Granseola as the entrée. This consists of 3 dishes meant for a minimum of two persons.

Fantasia De Granseola - Il's Centro Famous Sandcrab Lasagne

It came on a 3 plate stand and they just looked divine! We dived in straight for the Sandcrab lasagne. Oh My~ It was absolutely divine! The sweetness of the Sandcrab combined with the lasagne melded into a swirl of soft texture and richness in flavour, coupled together with the creamed crustacean sauce. The richness of the sauce, I have not had such a well made sauce in a long time. The complexity of the sauce coming from the seafood as well as the rich and smooth texture went really well with the Sandcrab lasagne. We were all in bliss for a while and did not waste any bit of the sauce. One of the guys had decided to go for another entrée and missed out! We gave him a taste of the sauce in the end. Haha!
Fantasia De Granseola - Sandcrab and Avocado Salad
Next was the Sandcrab and avocado salad. This was nice. The softness of the avocado went well with the Sandcrab.

Warm Scampi Panna Cotta with Porcini and Truffle Ravioli with Crustacean Butter Sauce

We were feeling a little full after the entrée. I wasn’t sure if I could finish my mains after that. One thing I know was that there will be no dessert for me. I simply do not have any room for it.

I ordered the Warm Scampi Panna Cotta with Porcini and Truffle Ravioli with Crustacean butter sauce. The Panna Cotta in a main dish was something different and I have to say that it was good. It adds a unique twist to the dish.
We left feeling really happy and satisfied. Definitely give their Famous Sandcrab lasagne a try when you're in Brisbane. It's worth its weight in title!
