Kimchee, Holborn: Another contender?

Picture 005

Kimchee is a new restaurant that opened up in Holborn. It took over the ex-Matsuri site that had a fire incident last year which it seems that they never managed to recover from.

It was another ladies’ catch up dinner and the opening of Kimchee was perfect timing. On the day we went, it was actually Opening Day 2.

Even at 8pm, the place was jam packed and we waited for 40 minutes to get a table. While waiting, there was a gentleman who asked if he could join us. Sorry mister, ladies only and trying to cut the queue is a no no! When you get to the front of the queue, a lady kindly invited us to wait inside at a scenic garden patch of stone pebbles and fountain with a wall of Korean characters glowing against a dark setting. Turn your head and you are greeted by the grill section where you could see the chefs busily grilling away.

We were finally called and upon being seated, we were informed that any skewers orders will take around 20 minutes due to how busy the kitchen was. We quickly placed our orders as most of us were starving by then. While waiting for our orders, we looked around and it was a huge place. I almost did not notice that there were 2 sections to the place that had a cage like wall dividing both sections. Most tables have seats of 6 with bar-like benches along the side for lone or double diners. I liked the decor with the lanterns motif used for the lights; the whole place had a streamlined unassuming posh feel to it.

It was quite amusing when our drinks arrived as the Korean tea came in a huge earthen pot that looked like those Chinese clay pots used to boil herbal soup.

Baohaus NYC: My new favourite Gua Bao 刮包 & Fiery explosion at Kyochon NYC

New York is a fantastic city for little bites and snacks. Not only do you get carts selling hot dogs & pretzels at nearly every block, I've even seen hot food like kebabs too.

Cheap food on the go is in abundance here. Feeling peckish before dinner, I headed to Baohaus for their Gua Bao 刮包 or steamed buns.

Haus Bao $4.50

As this was meant to be a snack, I decided to only order one and chose the signature Bao, the Haus Bao. The Haus Bao is made from all natural Hanger Steak. OMG, I love this. The combination of the soft steamed buns, shredded lean meat, crunchy peanuts and sweet red sugar is just lip-smackingly tasty. It was a melange of textures and taste with the cilantro adding a zing .

Where Momofuku is decadently rich like how you feel after a Chinese 10 course wedding dinner, Bauhaus version is rustic and down to earth. Simple delicious peasant food. I knew I said that I was only having one, but I found myself getting off the stool and went straight to the counter to order another.

Chairman Bao $4

This time, I got the Chairman Bao which is more comparable to Momofuku's. The meat here is all natural Berkshire Pork Belly that was braised slow and low. Again, I was not disappointed. There is a whole chunk of pork belly with its layer of fat in there but it didn't taste overly fatty and rich. I could easily devour 5 of these buns without any hesitation.

I have just found my new favourite 刮包 Gua Bao. Pity that it's so far from home.

Kyo Chon

My friend Mili kept telling me that I have to try Korean Fried Chicken when in NY.

So initially intending to head to Bon Bon, they were fully packed so it was to Kyo Chon across the street it would be.

Kyo Chon has two types of service reminiscent of Leon in London. You can go to the top floor for a full dinner service where they charge a little more or you can order their take away on the street level and eat it at the few tables and seats that are laid around for you.

As much as I am still a spicy-eater in training, how could I not choose their signature hot and sweet wings? I was forewarned by the cashier that it is very spicy. *Gulp* Not a problem, I said.

Kyo Chon

A few minutes later, I was staring at 5 beautiful spicy red wings. You can smell the spice even with the lid of the box closed.

How spicy is it? It's like a fiery explosion when you get down to the last two pieces. I had no trouble finishing my entire ice cold drink in the time it took me to finish the wings.

Kyo Chon

If you think spicy wings from KFC are spicy, this is on the other end of the scale. So for the spicy food lovers, this is a nice place to stop for some fiery bites.

Guess what I spied on the side? The CPR kit is available if it gets too HOT!

Milliore Korean Fusion Restaurant Jan 08

This post is a little overdue.

To celebrate the year of 2008, a bunch of us ended up at Milliore. After taking our seats, we commenced ordering and waited eagerly for our food to arrive. I had the best "Yuk Hwe" here that I've tried thus far in Sydney and was looking forward to this dish again.

We were served with some little side dishes initially to munch on while waiting for our food. Tasty! I couldn't get enough of the seaweed and potatoes.
Yuk Hwe
Thin raw beef slices with pear and apple slices with a dash of soy sauce and sesame dressing. Simply delicious. This is best eaten when the raw beef is still half frozen. Once the beef slices have the chance to thaw, it's not as great!

Next came our meats. It was cooked and served to us by one of the wait person.

Yummy! The sauce used really enhanced the pork and beef individually and it was still tender and juicy.

Pancake

Finally, we got started on the seafood hotpot.

I was struggling to finish by the end.

Godori

A recent trip to Canberra has seen me immersing my taste buds in food from the capital state.

I was recommended a Korean restaurant called Godori. The place was packed during lunch time and we had to sit outside along the pavement.

I ordered the Bimbimbab which came with miso soup as a set. The miso soup was welcomed warmly as it was quite a cold and rainy day.

Bimbimbab came thereafter in a hot stone bowl. They have one of the best sauce that you drip onto the bimbimbab that I have tried. The spiciness of the sauce blended really well with the vegetables and beef. Yum!

Milliore Korean Fusion Restaurant

Having since discovered the wonderful dish called “Yuk Hwe”, I’ve been an avid fan since and have been going to Korean restaurants with any chance I get to try this. Have to say that some restaurants make it better than others.

A friend of mine suggested one that is located in Capital Square near Chinatown. Happily we headed there. Throngs of filled tables greeted us and we were lucky to obtain the remaining table (more like space as we had to share the table with another party).

Some of their dishes are really huge and is value for money at the price that they charged. However, as there was only me and a friend this time, we had to skip it as we would not be able to finish those dishes.

There was the usual small side dishes and these were quite tasty.

Of course I ordered the Yuk Hwe (which is raw sliced beef strips with pears, radishes (sometimes apples) and sprinkling of sesame seeds, marinated with soy and sesame sauce and I am pretty sure something else though I’m not sure what). The other dish that we ordered was the Stir-fry pork strips with vegetables.

I have to say that the Yuk Hwe was excellent. Their version of the sauce and combination of vegetables was really complimentary of each other. The raw beef slices were still half frozen which is the best way to enjoy them. Some places serve them to you already defrosted, yuck! Best Yuk Hwe I’ve tasted in Sydney so far.

The stir-fry pork was of an acceptable standard. I will definitely come back here again.

San Ma Ru

I've tried a few places where they serve "Ginseng chicken" in Korean restaurants. The ones that I've tried have been good. When I happen to browse the menu for this restaurant and saw that they have "ginseng chicken" on the menu too, I made a note that I need to try this one.

Finally was able to come back and we were seated relatively quickly for lunch time hour. The decor is nice and clean.

Saw this one the menu and it reminded me of drinks back in my childhood. It is quite refreshing and definitely had the lychee taste in it.

As with the Korean restaurants here, you always get served serving of little appetisers which I always look forward too. Each restaurants tend to have their own version. I quite like their appetisers here. The tofu and the mushroom dishes was really good. We were given a plate with salt in it as well, wasn't sure which appetiser was I supposed to dip it with. That puzzled me.

As a side dish, we ordered the "Agedashi Tofu". This came as the watery version rather than the thick sauce that is usually served in other places. The tofu was really good, full of flavour and the softness of the tofu allows you to savour the delicateness of the texture.

Next arrive what we came here for, the "ginseng chicken". This is essentially a whole chicken with glutinous rice stuffing in the middle that is combined with ginseng, chestnuts and sometimes, red dates. It is then boiled in a pot so that the soup is chicken soup with ginseng. Talk about a power dish!
When it arrived, the soup was quite clear (different from the other ones I've tried). Tasted the soup and it is definitely chicken soup but you couldn't taste any ginseng. The chicken tore open quite easily and the meat was just right. Took some of the glutinous rice stuffing in the middle and tried that. It was terrible. The rice wasn't sticky enough and had no taste to it at all. I didn't enjoy the glutinous rice at all. There wasn't much infusion of the chestnuts and ginseng which were meant to play a role with the glutinous rice. In the end, we only found half a chestnut in the dish, that explains the lack of the chestnut's role.
The "ginseng chicken" here seems to be made quickly when it should have been prepared in the chicken earlier. There wasn't sufficient time for the flavours to combine to produce the taste that it was meant to be, not to mention the lack of the supplementary ingredients. I was quite disappointed.
Other than my sadness of the "ginseng chicken", the other dishes were good. So, do try this restaurant but just not the "ginseng chicken".

Han Ah Run Korean Restaurant

My sis decided to bring me to this Korean restaurant in Causeway Bay as it apparently won awards and quite well known for its food! Having just come from Sydney where there are tons of Korean restaurant and most owned by Koreans, I was a little hesitant to be coming to HK to try this but decided to give it a go!

I Have to say that my impression of their service is really bad!

Firstly, we sat at a table with another couple who arrived at the same time, however, it took so long for even our drinks and side dishes to come!

After some constant reminding, our side dishes finally came after the couple next to us were already halfway through their meal!

Hmm....but I have to say that they do give more side dishes than in Sydney. Usually, there is only 3 or 4 but here, there is at least 8! The side dishes were quite tasty and I especially like the potatoes.

After that, it seemed like ages before our main dish arrived! By the time it arrived, the couple next to us had finished and was paying their bill! I mean seriously, is that really bad service or what? It doesn't matter if the food is good but to make us wait so long and add to the fact that the couple next to us having finish before our main dish arrived is just a little too much for me.

When it finally arrived, we even had to cook it ourselves because they were too busy when apparently, they usually do it!

I can see my impression slipping further down. There was also a lot of fat on the meat for those whom are conscious! In the end, you were supposed to place the meat onto the lettuces and place the sauce that was given and some other vegetables. It tasted like the chinese version of "San Choy Bow" to me. The winning part of this dish is that the sauce was really really good!

Maybe it just happens that my experience this time was a bad one as they usually have pretty good service according to my sis, but this time, it just didn't do it for me.
